Call for Papers: Special Issue on Highlights of Graduate Projects

Interested authors are invited to submit graduate project highlights for consideration for publication in our first issue of an ongoing annual series that seeks to highlight exceptional graduate work arising from project-based programs (not thesis-based/dissertation-based).  Projects are expected to be high quality; therefore, their graduate project highlight deserves publication in the OTESSA Journal, which means inclusion in esteemed databases such as ERIC and EBSCO Education Ultimate databases. We strongly encourage submissions from authors who identify as belonging to structurally marginalized groups. Guidelines for submission are in the following section.

Submission Requirements
Each project must be stored in an institutional open repository and not be submitted to the journal.  Instead, we will only publish a two-page highlight with a hyperlink to the full project stored at your institution’s repository. If you are not familiar with your institution’s repository, please contact the librarian for your campus responsible for scholarly communication for assistance. We invite submissions for this special issue as follows:

  • Graduate project 2-page highlight (using the template provided)
    • This is the only document that will be published in the special issue if accepted for publication after review. All submissions are expected to include the following:
      • The list of contributing authors is expected to include graduate students with supervisors/committee members (and other relevant stakeholders who warrant co-authorship). Please include an ORCID identifier for each author.
      • The keyword “graduate project” and five or so additional keywords that include the relevant topics and the educational context
      • A hyperlink to the full project stored in an institutional open repository.
      • Program information (e.g., University/Program Name/Program Type such as “University of ______ Department of _____ Master’s of Education program in Educational Technology (project-based)”).
      • A 250-word highlight statement providing a high-level summary for readers who visit the full project link (e.g., significant contribution, where to find highlights of the project such as a resource on page X, chapter Y or appendix Z, and suitability for certain contexts, subjects, grade/age/year levels, or other considerations for implementation).
  • Rationale for inclusion (to be used for the review process and not for publication)
    • Using the template provided, this document contains the author’s rationale for inclusions considering the evaluation criteria.
  • Faculty endorsement(s)
    • Using the template provided, one or two faculty members are expected to endorse the inclusion of the graduate project highlight into the special issue. The faculty endorsing the inclusion of a graduate project highlight is expected to have reviewed the following:
      • the *full project* that is stored in the institutional repository
      • the graduate project highlight
      • the graduate project highlight rationale

Submission Timeline

Launch of Call: Sept 10, 2024

Submissions are welcome immediately and continuously with *soft deadlines* for the each of the following time frames:

  • June 1 for summer publication
  • Oct 1 for fall publication
  • Feb 1 for spring publication

The proposed deadlines are fluid and any potential author(s) are encouraged to reach out to the editors at any stage to determine if their proposal can be reviewed for inclusion.

The special issue will use a continuous publication model, so accepted submissions will be published as soon as they are ready. There is no end date as we plan to publish a graduate project highlight issue annually for the foreseeable future.

Abstract and Manuscript Information

Once the graduate project highlight is accepted, the paper must follow all submission guidelines posted for the OTESSA Journal. This includes an abstract in both English and French is required as well as a list of keywords in both languages. The abstract should summarize the topic, purpose of the project, and the resource and/or recommendations reached. Articles published by the OTESSA Journal will be given a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC-BY 4.0) License. We encourage, but do not require that full projects stored in their institutional repository also carry a Creative Commons license. If your institution has not provided Creative Commons licensing pathways or options for Master’s projects to be deposited there, we are pleased to assist with providing examples at existing institutions for them to adopt.
